Dubai, in partnership with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has unveiled the Zayed and Rashid Mural, the ‘world’s largest mosaic artwork’, located in Hatta. This grand installation pays tribute to the UAE’s founding fathers, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and is part of the #ZayedAndRashid campaign, which celebrates national events from Flag Day – 3 November to the 53rd Eid Al Etihad – 2 December.

It’s as huge as covering 2,198.7 square meters on the slope of the Hatta Dam Water Falls. The mural recreates a historic photograph of the two leaders from the time of the UAE’s foundation. A video shared on social media offers a peek into the tremendous hard work that went into bringing this vision to life. The artwork has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest mosaic.

This mosaic is part of the Dubai Street Museum project, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2016 to showcase Dubai’s cultural heritage through public art. The mural continues the collaboration between Brand Dubai and DEWA, with the goal of creating artworks that connect the community to Dubai’s public spaces in new and unique ways.

Mona Al Marri, Director General of the Government of Dubai Media Office, thanked DEWA for its partnership in bringing this project to life. She highlighted how such projects enhance the city’s landmarks and engage the public in meaningful ways.

The stunning mosaic was created by Russian artist Sergey Korbasov, supported by over 100 local and international artisans. Over four months, they handcrafted the artwork using 1.2 million pieces, each measuring 5×5 cm. The mosaic blends traditional materials from the Hatta region, such as rocks and soil, to connect the artwork to the local environment.

Set against the backdrop of the Hajar mountains and the beautiful waterfall, the piece reflects the traditional colors of the UAE’s founding fathers’ attire, adding both historical and emotional significance.
