The Sharjah Executive Council has announced new rules allowing for the conditional release of prisoners, aiming to balance rehabilitation with public safety.

Under the decision unveiled on Tuesday, inmates may be eligible for parole after completing three-fourths of their sentence. For those serving life imprisonment, conditional release is possible after serving a minimum of 20 years. Parole terms will still include restrictions and can last for one month or longer, depending on individual cases.

Approval Process and Oversight

The Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police holds the authority to grant conditional releases. Once approved, the emirate’s public prosecution will be notified to oversee the implementation of the decision.

The announcement also provided a detailed framework for enforcing the rules, including:

  • Eligibility criteria for release.
  • Obstacles that could prevent parole.
  • Grounds for cancellation of conditional release.
  • Executive decisions for enforcement.

These measures aim to ensure that conditional release aligns with Sharjah’s broader legal and public safety objectives.
